Cardiology is a large department that provides diagnostic and therapeutic services for patients with suspected and known heart conditions. Alongside elective services such as diagnostic tests and outpatient clinics, we provide emergency cardiac care for patients admitted to hospital. This includes a 24/7 acute heart attack service. We use state of the art technologies and provide care based on the most up-to-date guidelines and recommendations.

Our service is provided over several sites, with both elective and emergency care provided at 半岛体育 Park and Wexham Park hospitals, elective diagnostics and clinics at Heatherwood Hospital, and clinics at additional locations including King Edward VII Hospital and Farnham Hospital.

We pride ourselves on being an experienced team of consultants, nurse specialists, cardiac physiologists, coronary care nurses and cardiac rehabilitation specialists. We manage a wide range of cardiac conditions, and have strong links with tertiary cardiac centres for patients needing cardiac surgery, complex ablation and complex congenital heart conditions.

We offer assessment and treatment (or where necessary referral for treatment to a tertiary cardiac centre) for a wide range of cardiac conditions:

  • coronary artery disease
  • heart failure
  • valvular heart conditions
  • heart rhythm disorders
  • heart muscle disorders
  • inherited heart conditions
  • simple congenital heart disease

We offer a wide range of modalities, including including advanced echocardiography, cardiac CT and cardiac MRI.

We also offer ECG (electrocardiogram), Holter (heart rhythm) monitoring, exercise tolerance tests and blood pressure monitoring.

We provide diagnosis and onward management for patients with suspected or known heart failure. We run heart failure clinics at all of our sites, and also in the community.

Treatment is tailored to the individual and the underlying cause of the heart failure. It can include:

  • Medications to treat fluid retention
  • Medications, and where indicated, pacemakers to improve quality of life and prognosis
  • Specialist nursing support for education and optimisation of treatment

Some examples of these include:

  • heart block and bradyarrhythmias
  • supraventricular tachycardia
  • atrial fibrillation
  • atrial flutter
  • ventricular tachycardia

We provide treatments that include:

  • anti-arrhythmic medications
  • pacemakers
  • complex pacemakers, including implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICD) and cardiac resynchronisation therapy (CRT)
  • ablation for tachyarrhythmias such as supraventricular tachycardias, atrial flutter, accessory pathways

Our pacing clinic, for monitoring of patients with a pacemaker, can offer remote follow-up for most patients.
