Hepatology is part of the鈥gastroenterology鈥痙epartment. You may be referred to our service if there are concerns regarding a liver or biliary problem.

We have close links with both King’s College Hospital and the Royal Free Hospital so that patients can be followed up closer to home, particularly following liver transplantation. We also work closely with our hepatobiliary and oncology colleagues at the Royal Surrey County Hospital.

Liver clinics currently run across many 半岛体育 Health sites.

We have several national and international clinical trials available to our patients, and you may be offered an opportunity to take part.

We provide a comprehensive hepatology service, seeing patients with:

  • Alcohol related liver disease
  • Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease
  • Autoimmune liver diseases (autoimmune hepatitis, primary biliary cholangitis, primary sclerosing cholangitis)
  • Metabolic and inherited liver diseases Haemochromatosis and investigation of raised ferritin levels
  • Cirrhosis and its complications
  • Abnormal liver blood tests
  • Non-cirrhotic portal hypertension
  • Benign liver tumours
  • Hepatocellular cancer
  • Liver transplant patients
  • Patients with end-stage liver disease not suitable for transplantation

We offer both face-to-face and telephone clinics, which run on most days of the week. These include consultant clinics, hepatology specialist nurse-led clinics and Fibroscan clinics.

Patients admitted to 半岛体育 Park Hospital, either electively or as an emergency, are usually cared for in ward F9, which provides specialist care for patients with liver and gastrointestinal (GI) disease. We provide a seven-day GI / hepatology consultant-led service.

Patients admitted to Wexham Park Hospital, either electively or as an emergency, are usually cared for in Ward 3, which provides specialist care for patients with liver and GI disease. We provide a seven-day GI / hepatology consultant-led service.

Note the endoscopic retrograde cholangio pancreatography / endoscopic ultrasound scan (ERCP / EUS) service (to investigate and treat biliary tree problems) is provided by our upper GI surgery colleagues.

Fibroscan is a type of ultrasound that measures liver scarring (fibrosis) and fatty change (steatosis). Your doctor may recommend that you have this test to help understand the condition of your liver.

This may help them plan your treatment. The test is quick and painless and gives an immediate result. If you have a FibroScan appointment, please make sure to fast for three hours prior to the procedure, although you can drink sips of water.

We treat patients with both hepatitis B and C infection, with access to the latest treatments. The service is operated by liver specialists alongside clinical nurse specialists. We have weekly multidisciplinary meetings to review treatment plans and work closely with our partners in the Surrey Operational Delivery Network.

We offer a comprehensive endoscopy service including variceal therapy (banding / glue injection). We also provide a 24/7 gastrointestinal (GI) bleed service with consultant review.

We have a day case large-volume paracentesis service to drain ascites (fluid from the abdomen). This is provided by our ambulatory care unit (AECU) or medical investigation day unit (MIDU).

A long term ascitic drain (LTAD) pathway is currently being developed and may be suitable for a subset of patients.

Day case infusions (e.g. IV iron) are provided by ambulatory care unit (AECU) and our intravenous and vascular access services (IVAS) infusion day unit

Day case infusion in Wexham Park Hospital is carried out by our medical investigation day unit (MIDU) team.

Day case venesections for iron-overload disorders are provided by the intravenous and vascular access services (IVAS) unit.

Day case venesection in Wexham Park Hospital is carried out by our medical investigation day unit (MIDU) team.

Our radiologists perform a comprehensive liver biopsy service including both percutaneous (across the skin) and transjugular (though a vein in the neck) routes.
